How To Crochet Textured Flower Pillow – Free Pattern

Here’s a step-by-step guide to crochet a textured flower pillow — a beautiful decorative item with a 3D floral motif. This project typically involves making several layered petals in a circular fashion, then assembling them onto a pillow base.

🌸 Materials Needed:

  • Worsted weight yarn (multiple colors optional)
  • Crochet hook (usually size H/5.0mm or suitable for your yarn)
  • Pillow insert (12”–16” recommended)
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Fiberfill (if not using a pillow insert)

🌼 Step 1: Create the Flower Center

  1. Make a Magic Ring.
  2. Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as 1st dc), 11 dc into the ring. Join with sl st to top of ch-2. (12 dc)
  3. Fasten off or continue with same yarn if doing a one-color flower.

🌺 Step 2: Add Petal Layers (Texture!)

Each petal layer will be worked in the front loops only (FLO) or back loops only (BLO) to give a raised effect.

First Layer of Petals (FLO of Round 1):

  1. Join yarn to any FLO.
  2. (Ch 2, 3 dc in same loop, ch 2, sl st in next FLO) repeat around. (6 petals)
  3. Fasten off.

Second Layer of Petals (BLO of Round 1):

  1. Join yarn to any BLO.
  2. (Ch 3, 5 dc in same loop, ch 3, sl st in next BLO) repeat around. (6 larger petals)

Repeat this method for more layers using BLO from new base rounds, increasing the number of dc in petals each time for depth and size.

🌻 Step 3: Make the Pillow Base (Front and Back)

Make two circles or squares to fit your pillow insert using sc or dc rounds.

Option A: Circle Pillow Base

  1. Start with a magic ring and increase each round (like making a flat circle) until diameter matches the insert.
  2. For texture, consider alternating BLO/FLO rows or adding puff stitches.

Option B: Square Pillow Base

  • Crochet a square in rows or in the round (granny square style).
  • You can attach the flower motif at the center once finished.

🌹 Step 4: Assemble the Pillow

  1. Sew or crochet the flower motif onto the front panel.
  2. Place both pillow panels together (RS facing out).
  3. Sc around the edges, stuffing the insert or pillow inside before fully closing.

💡 Optional Embellishments:

  • Add beads or buttons to flower centers.
  • Make multiple smaller flowers instead of one big one.
  • Mix different stitch textures: popcorn, puff, bobble, etc.
